Quick Answer: The Cliffs of Moher are about 65 km from Shannon Airport, which is roughly one hour by car. The quickest ways there are a hire car or a pre-booked private transfer. There is no direct bus. By public transport you take one bus to Ennis and a second bus to the Cliffs, and the trip usually takes two hours or more.
Our team is based in Shannon, Co. Clare, so this is a trip we know well. Below you will find each way to get there, how long it takes, and a few tips that make the day easier.
How Far Are the Cliffs of Moher from Shannon Airport?
The Cliffs are on the Atlantic coast of north-west Clare. Shannon Airport sits on the Shannon Estuary in the south of the county. By road the distance is about 65 km (40 miles).
Without stops, the drive takes around one hour. Allow a bit longer in summer, when the roads near Lahinch and Liscannor get busy.

The Main Route by Road
Most drivers take this route. It is well signposted the whole way.
- Leave the airport on the N19 and join the M18 motorway heading north.
- Exit at Ennis and pick up the N85 towards Ennistymon.
- From Ennistymon, take the N67 to the seaside town of Lahinch.
- From Lahinch, follow the R478 through Liscannor to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience.
The last stretch after Lahinch is a narrower coast road. Take it handy, especially if you have just come off a long flight.
Ways to Get from Shannon Airport to the Cliffs of Moher
| Option | Time (approx.) | Door to door? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hire car | About 1 hour | Yes | Confident drivers who want to explore |
| Private transfer or chauffeur | About 1 hour | Yes | Families, groups, and a relaxed first day |
| Taxi | About 1 hour | Yes | A one-way trip at short notice |
| Bus (change in Ennis) | 2 hours or more | No | Solo travellers on a tight budget |
1. Hire a Car
The car hire desks are in the arrivals hall at Shannon Airport. A hire car gives you the most freedom, and you can stop wherever you like along the coast.
Keep in mind that Ireland drives on the left, and many hire cars are manual. If you have not driven here before, read our guide to driving in Ireland as a tourist before you collect the keys.
Parking at the Cliffs is included in your admission ticket, so you do not need to pay for it separately.
2. Book a Private Transfer or Chauffeur
A pre-booked driver meets you in arrivals and takes you straight to the Cliffs, or to your hotel first. You do not have to think about directions, parking or driving on the left after an overnight flight.
This is the option many families and small groups choose. It also lets you add stops, such as Lahinch beach, the cascades at Ennistymon or the village of Doolin. With our Shannon Airport transfers, the car is booked for you and the price is agreed before you travel.
If you want a full day out, a private chauffeur tour can take in the Cliffs, the Burren and Galway Bay in one trip.
3. Take a Taxi
There is a taxi rank outside the arrivals hall. Taxi fares in Ireland are regulated by the National Transport Authority, and the meter runs for the whole trip.
The catch is the return journey. Taxis do not usually wait at the Cliffs, and there are few in the area. If you go by taxi, plan how you will get back before you set off.
4. Go by Bus
There is no direct bus from Shannon Airport to the Cliffs of Moher. You need two buses:
- Shannon Airport to Ennis: Bus Éireann route 343 or route 51.
- Ennis to the Cliffs of Moher: Bus Éireann route 350, which runs along the coast via Lahinch and on to Doolin.
Allow at least two hours, plus waiting time in Ennis. The 350 can run less often outside the summer months, so check the times on the Bus Éireann website before you travel.
Can You Visit the Cliffs of Moher Straight from Your Flight?
Yes, and plenty of people do. Transatlantic flights often land at Shannon early in the morning, and the Cliffs are an easy first stop on the way to a hotel in Clare, Galway or Kerry.
A few tips if you are going straight from the airport:
- Do not drive yourself if you have not slept on the flight. A driver lets you rest on the way.
- Pack a warm, waterproof layer in your hand luggage. The wind on the cliff top is strong, even in summer.
- Keep your first day short. One hour on the cliffs and a stop in Doolin or Lahinch is plenty.

Tips for Your Visit
Book Your Ticket Online
Tickets are sold in time slots, and the price can depend on the slot you pick. Your ticket covers parking, the visitor centre and exhibition, and O’Brien’s Tower when it is open. Check the current prices and book on the official Cliffs of Moher website.
Go Early or Late
The quietest times are before 11am and after 4pm. In the middle of the day, especially in summer, the paths near the visitor centre get crowded with coach tours.
Check the Opening Hours
The site is open all year, apart from 24 to 26 December. Opening hours change with the season. In summer (May to August) it stays open until 9pm, while in winter it closes at 5pm. Our guide to the best time to visit Ireland explains what each season is like.
Stay Behind the Wall
There are no railings at the cliff edge beyond the main viewing areas, and the ground can be wet and slippy. Keep to the paths, stay back from the edge, and keep a close eye on children.
Allow Enough Time
Most visitors spend one and a half to two hours at the Cliffs. If you want to walk part of the Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk, for example from the visitor centre to Hag’s Head and back, allow a half day.
