Quick Answer: The biggest Christmas markets in Ireland in 2026 are in Galway and Belfast. The Galway Christmas market in Eyre Square is expected to open in early November and run until the end of December. The Belfast Christmas market at City Hall runs from 14 November to 22 December. Dublin has TwinkleTown in Smithfield from 20 November to 31 December, and Christmas in Limerick runs from 23 November to 3 January 2027. Entry to all of them is free.
Christmas markets have become one of the best reasons to visit Ireland in winter. The days are short, but the cities glow with lights, wooden chalets and the smell of mulled wine. We drive visitors to every one of these cities on our chauffeur tours across Ireland, so this guide covers what each market is like, when it opens in 2026 and the easiest way to get there, whether you fly into Shannon, Dublin or Belfast.
Christmas Markets in Ireland 2026 at a Glance
Here are the main markets and their 2026 dates. We checked every date with the organisers or the local council in October 2026.

| Galway Christmas Market | Eyre Square, Galway | Early November to 31 December | Expected |
| Belfast Christmas Market | City Hall, Belfast | 14 November to 22 December | Confirmed |

Most markets are open every day, but hours are shorter early in the week. Saturdays in December are by far the busiest days, so go on a weekday afternoon if you can.
Galway Christmas Market
The Galway Christmas market is the one most people picture when they think of Christmas markets in Ireland. It fills Eyre Square, right in the centre of the city, with rows of wooden chalets, a big wheel, a carousel and a German-style beer tent. It usually opens earlier than any other market in the country and stays open until the end of December.
Galway Christmas Market 2026 dates and hours
The organisers have a licence to run the market for about eight weeks this winter. It is expected to open in early November and close on 31 December, but the full 2026 dates had not been published when we checked in October. Based on recent years, typical hours are:
- Monday to Wednesday: 12 noon to 8pm
- Thursday to Saturday: 10am to 10pm
- Sunday: 10am to 8pm
Check Galway Tourism for the confirmed dates before you travel.
What to expect
- Food stalls with bratwurst, pretzels, crêpes, waffles and roast chestnuts.
- Gifts and crafts from Irish and European traders.
- Rides for children, including a carousel and a small train, plus a Santa’s grotto that you book in advance.
- Live music and choirs on most evenings.
- Free entry. You only pay for food, drinks, rides and gifts.

Getting to the Galway Christmas market
Eyre Square is next to Ceannt Station, so the train drops you right at the market. By road, Galway is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Shannon Airport and about 2 hours 30 minutes from Dublin Airport. Our guide to getting from Dublin Airport to Galway compares the coach, train, car hire and private transfer options.
Galway traffic is heavy in December, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings, and city-centre car parks fill early. If you are driving, park outside the centre and walk in, or book a driver who can drop you at the square.
Belfast Christmas Market
The Belfast Christmas market is the biggest in Northern Ireland and one of the best in either part of the island. Rows of chalets fill the gardens around City Hall, a grand building in the centre of the city. It has an international feel, with food from around the world, as well as Irish crafts and gifts.
Belfast Christmas Market 2026 dates and hours
Belfast City Council has confirmed that the market runs from Saturday 14 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026. It opens at 12 noon on the first day, the same day as the city’s Christmas lights switch-on, so expect big crowds that evening. Normal hours are:
- Monday to Wednesday: 10am to 8pm
- Thursday to Saturday: 10am to 10pm
- Sunday: 12 noon to 6pm
Note that the market closes on 22 December, earlier than Galway or Dublin. Entry is free. Belfast is in the UK, so prices are in pounds sterling. Most stalls take cards, but bring some sterling cash just in case.
Getting to the Belfast Christmas market
Belfast is about 1 hour 45 minutes by road from Dublin Airport. The Enterprise train from Dublin Connolly takes just over two hours to Belfast Grand Central, which is a short walk from City Hall. If you fly straight into Belfast, City Hall is about 10 minutes by road from George Best Belfast City Airport and about 30 minutes from Belfast International. We run Belfast airport transfers from both.
From Shannon, Belfast is a long day trip of over 4 hours each way. It works better as an overnight stop, or as part of a longer route around the island.
Limerick Christmas Market
Limerick does Christmas differently. Instead of one big market, the city runs a season of events called Christmas in Limerick, from 23 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. It usually includes a light-up parade, a festive market in the city centre and Christmas weekends at the Milk Market.
The Milk Market at Christmas
For many locals, the Limerick Christmas market means the Milk Market. This covered market in the old city has been trading since the 1800s, and in December it adds extra Christmas days with local food, handmade gifts, crafts and a Santa’s grotto. In 2025 it ran over three blocks of days in December, with Saturday food markets from 8am to 3pm and a final market on Christmas Eve morning. Expect a similar pattern in 2026. Because it has a roof, it is the best choice of any market here on a wet day.
The full 2026 programme had not been published when we checked. Keep an eye on limerick.ie/christmas for dates and times.
Getting to Limerick
Limerick is the closest city to Shannon Airport, only about 25 minutes by road. That makes it the easiest market to visit on your first or last evening in Ireland. Our Shannon Airport transfers can drop you at your Limerick hotel. From Dublin Airport it is about 2 hours 30 minutes by road. Limerick is also about 1 hour 15 minutes from Galway, so you can easily see both markets on the same trip.
Dublin Christmas Markets
Dublin does not have one big central market like Galway or Belfast. Instead, there are several Dublin Christmas markets spread across the city. These are the main ones for 2026:
- TwinkleTown, Smithfield Square: 20 November to 31 December, closed 24 to 26 December. Food and drink stalls, an ice rink and family shows. Take the Luas Red Line to the Smithfield stop.
- TwinkleTown, St Patrick’s Park: 27 November to 23 December. A new second site for 2026, beside St Patrick’s Cathedral in the Liberties.
- Everwinter at the RDS: 25 November to 23 December. A new winter festival in Ballsbridge, with a market of Irish makers, a covered ice rink, a circus and a vintage fairground. It is a short walk from the Sandymount and Lansdowne Road DART stations.
- Swords Castle Christmas Market: 27 to 29 November and 5 to 6 December, in the grounds of a medieval castle in north Co. Dublin, about 10 minutes from Dublin Airport.
One change to note: the popular Dublin Castle Christmas market is not expected to run in 2026. The castle is being used for Ireland’s Presidency of the EU Council and is closed to the public until early 2027.
Entry to TwinkleTown is free, but the ice rink and some shows are ticketed. Everwinter has ticketed attractions, so check the prices on its website before you go. The city centre is about 30 minutes from Dublin Airport by road, and our Dublin Airport transfers can take you straight to your hotel.
Other Christmas Markets Worth the Trip
- Waterford Winterval: 13 November to 23 December. One of the largest Christmas festivals in Ireland, set in the Viking Triangle, with a market, an ice rink and a Santa’s grotto in the Medieval Museum. See Discover Ireland for details.
- Cork: the city-centre Christmas markets usually open in mid-November. Check Cork City Council for the 2026 dates.
- Kilkenny: Yulefest runs a weekend Christmas market in the medieval city, usually from late November.
How to Get to the Christmas Markets
Ireland is small, but December days are short. The sun sets around 4.20pm, so you will spend more of your trip in the dark than you might expect. Here is how long the drive takes from the two main airports:

You have three main ways to get around:
- Train: good for city-to-city trips. Galway, Limerick, Dublin and Belfast all have stations close to their markets. Book ahead for December weekends, as trains fill up.
- Hire car: gives you freedom, but winter driving means dark evenings, wet roads and busy city car parks. You also cannot drink at the market if you are driving.
- Private driver: the easiest way to see more than one market. You are dropped at the door and picked up when you are ready, so everyone can enjoy the mulled wine.
A popular route for visitors flying into Shannon is Limerick on the first evening, Galway the next day, then Dublin and Belfast before flying home from Dublin. Flying into Dublin, you can do the same trip the other way round.

Tips for Visiting Christmas Markets in Ireland
- Go early in the week. Monday to Thursday afternoons are much quieter than Saturdays.
- Arrive just before dark. You see the stalls in daylight, then stay for the lights.
- Dress for rain. Most markets are outdoors. A waterproof jacket and warm shoes matter more than an umbrella in a crowd.
- Book hotels early. Galway and Belfast hotels fill up on December weekends, especially around the opening and on match days.
- Remember Christmas closures. Belfast closes on 22 December, and most markets close from 24 to 26 December. Public transport is very limited on Christmas Day and St Stephen’s Day.
- Carry two currencies. The Republic uses the euro, and Northern Ireland uses pounds sterling.
